Watching the Established Life Become Visible

The Witness of the Biblical Calendar and a Year of Alignment

A 5787 reflection by Betty Hall | Beyond the Dalet

What if the biblical calendar gives us more than dates to remember? What if, as we move through its months, appointed times, histories, and rhythms, we find ourselves surrounded by witnesses that have been speaking all along?

An artistic representation titled 'The Father's Witnesses', depicting various biblical concepts including letters, calendar, tabernacle, and prophets. The background features a serene landscape with a sunrise and a figure standing by a river.

The Father’s witnesses didn’t start speaking when we heard their voice.

Throughout Scripture, God has placed His testimony within creation, history, covenant, sanctuary, priesthood, sacrifice, harvest, wilderness, feast, and dwelling. None of these witnesses exists to draw attention to itself. Their testimony leads us toward the Son.

Watching the Established Life Become Visible grew from listening to those witnesses as the biblical year turned toward 5787. What began with the Hebrew letters vav and zayin gradually widened into a landscape that included the months of the biblical calendar, the appointed times, biblical histories, and the testimony of Scripture itself.

This is not a prophetic word for 5787. Nor is it a set of twelve spiritual assignments to accomplish as we move from month to month. It is an invitation to watch.

We are watching from the other side of the cross. We are also on the other side of the Spirit’s outpouring. Christ has accomplished His work. Holy Spirit has been given. The foundation does not need to become more established.

The question, then, is what that established life looks like when it becomes visible through His people.

Across the twelve months, the witnesses take us through four movements: the heart learning alignment, the revealing of what was already there, living from what has already been accomplished, and finally, anticipating what is yet to be seen.

Some of those witnesses speak quietly. Others refuse to remain quiet at all. A courtroom fills. A courtyard erupts. Ancient histories suddenly find themselves sitting beside resurrection and Pentecost. Letters speak alongside months. Familiar Scriptures are heard again from within the reality of Christ’s finished work.

They do not all say the same thing in the same way.

They do not need to.

Again and again, their testimony brings us to the Son.

This full-length reflection is being offered as a PDF because it was never intended to belong to a single reading. It is something you can carry with you through 5787, returning to it as the months unfold and the witnesses gathered within these pages come into view again. You may choose to begin by reading it from beginning to end, or you may find yourself returning month by month, watching for what becomes recognizable in the life around you—and perhaps in your own.

Watching the Established Life Become Visible is meant to be read slowly. There is a great deal gathered within these pages, and some of what is here may need time to settle before moving on. This is not a work to simply read through and finish, but one to sit with, return to, and allow the witnesses of Scripture to speak in their own time.

You may find yourself lingering over a particular month, Scripture, Hebrew letter, or connection longer than you expected. That is part of the journey. There is no need to hurry through these pages; give yourself permission to stop, consider, and return as recognition comes.

We have entered the year 5787.

Now we watch.

An Invitation to Linger With the Scriptures
Giving the Witnesses Room to Speak

Beyond the Dalet has never been about reducing Scripture to a few easily digestible points. Here, we stay with the Scriptures long enough to recognize patterns, follow words and themes across passages, and listen to the witness of Hebrew and Greek when they help us see more clearly. We allow the witnesses to gather, trusting that understanding often develops as we begin to see what they are revealing together.

That kind of engagement does not require someone to be a scholar. It does ask for attentiveness, curiosity, and a willingness to move slowly. Sometimes that means lingering over a passage, following a connection we had not noticed before, or sitting with something before we fully recognize what we are seeing. There is no need to hurry. Scripture has a way of opening before us when we are willing to stay with it.
