The headline: Prayer Will Be Answered was unexpected. Yet it was just what I needed. It lifted my heart and gave me the confidence that God actually heard me. I had just spent a few minutes praying for a family member who is facing great trial today. I opened the devotional app on my phone there it was, Streams in the Deserts entry for today. I know God answers prayer. Yet, in the moment, today, it imparted assuring confidence from the Lord that He had certainly heard my prayer. And He answered me. I picked up my phone and tapped the icon for the Streams in the Desert app. And it was like water to my soul right in the palm of my hand. One tap and the words “Prayer will be answered” came up on the screen. In that moment I was reminded how a simple word of encouragement can remind you that God is right there with you.
Further evidence came in the wave of peace and calm despite the storm that swept over the caller on the other end of the phone. All I did was pray. God answered. I asked for peace for the troubled heart on the other end of the phone. And you know what? God answered. He swept in as the God of All Comfort. Like bread from heaven, the words fed my soul. Thank you God, for answered prayer.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 2 Cor. 1:3
Circumstances have the potential to bring anxiety, fear and uncertainty. God however, brings peace in the midst of circumstances, calm in the midst of trial and wisdom in the midst of chaos. Life is busy. Demands are great. It can be difficult to see our way through the next few minutes, much less the whole day.
Life can be challenging to fit in a few quiet moments to feed our spirit with the word of God. I love to study the word but I don’t always have time to go deep. I love devotionals, especially the classics. Often it is just what I need to hear in that moment. Like this morning. I didn’t even know I needed it until there it was. Prayer Will Be Answered!
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Proverbs 25:11
No matter how long we have been walking with God we all need a bit of encouragement and comfort from time to time. I stumbled on this recently and thought I would share the goods. It’s a website with apps available from Apple and Google. Youdevotional.com has a number of classic devotionals including Streams in the Desert, Morning and Evening, Faith’s Checkbook, Our Daily Walk, and others. Here’s the entry for today June 16, 2020 from Daily Prayer Guide based on Leaves of Life by Margaret Bird Steinmetz
The sovereign Lord has given me the capacity to be his spokesman, so that I know how to help the weary. He wakes me up every morning; he makes me alert so I can listen attentively as disciples do. — Isaiah 50:4 NET
When to the sessions of sweet, solemn thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored and sorrows end.
— William Shakespeare.
Seldom can the heart be lonely
If it seek a lonelier still—
Self-forgetting, seeking only
Emptier cups of love to fill.
— F. R. Havergal.
Gracious Father, keep within me that cheer and courage which never has a place for weary murmurings; and with peace make the hours of solitude profitable as they pass. Help me to seek those who are in need of sympathy and encouragement, that I may help them to have a tranquil life. Amen.
