The Inner Bet

A House Ablaze –  Inside the Peh

When examining the symbolism of the Hebrew letters one thing we look at is how the letter is constructed. In doing so we might ask; what is inside the letter peh p? In the belly of the peh is letter bet. And inside the belly of bet is vov. Bet represents a heart or home. The vov within the bet is like a wick. It is what sets the heart ablaze. The vov represents what we are connected to. The peh is a mouth. What is inside the mouth is the tongue, which represents speech. It is what comes out of the mouth. So it will be important in this peh season to be consciously aware of what comes out of our mouth.

When we are connected with God through covenant that vov is the very flame of the Lord. Jesus, when He spoke parabolically as identifying a tree by its fruit He said:

Connection with the Spirit of God

When we become born of the Spirit, (Jn. 3:5-6) the flame, the presence of the Lord, takes up residence within our hearts. In this context the fire within the bet is a picture of the Holy Spirit in the innermost being of the believer. The Spirit is referred to as either fire or water in scripture.

Purifying

For the one in covenant with God, this peh season will have a particular focus on the internal purifying work of the Holy Spirit. The flame of the Lord is both a revealing and a consuming fire. According to 1 Corinthians 3 the fire will test the quality of each man’s work whether it was wrought by the Spirit or the flesh. That which was done in the flesh will be burned. That which was the workmanship of the Spirit will remain.

The same fire that purifies and consumes the wood, hay and straw is the same fire that enlightens. This is the flame of the Lord that illuminates the temple of God. The born from above, Spirit inhabited, ekklesia are the temple of God. The same Spirit which inhabited the Tabernacle is the same Spirit which inhabits the life of the believer. That flame illuminates and purifies. It burns the flesh. As we allow the Spirit of the Lord to penetrate our lives with His holy flame, we will experience the all-consuming nature of the fire of God. Throughout this peh season that flame will be working in the hearts and lives of the Jesus’ disciples.

A Broken Vov

When our vov (our connection with God) gets broken through joining with the god of this world we no longer enjoy the sense of complete peach which comes from the Prince of Peace. We experience a loss of peace. This covenant of peace was given to the one who had zeal in his heart to keep the house of God clear of adultery with the god of this world.

We need to examine our hearts. What state is our connection with God? If our vov w, our connection with God is broken through friendship with the world we are probably experiencing some degree of inner turmoil. The god of this world brings turmoil and torment. He opposes God and the people of God. The evil ones intention is to cause disruption to the life of God’s children. Through friendship with the world our peace with God is disturbed.

The friendship in this verse refers to a trusted confidant. It is of someone or something held dear in a close bond of personal affection. The word translated enmity means animosity, hostility, and alienation. It is something which is in direct conflict. Is it any wonder that being in close relationship with the god of this world is oppositional to God? The apostle James refers to these as adulterers and adulteresses. These are like those who in Numbers 25 took on the gods of the Midianites. They have broken their vov, their covenant connection with God through making a covenant connection with the world.

The more we separate ourselves from the god of this world and are joined to God the flame of God increases. As the flame of God in our innermost being intensifies the greater our peace with God, the greater the work of the Holy Spirit is evident in and through us. In this peh p season we will be experiencing the flame of the Lord as the Spirit does an inner work in the lives of the children of God.

Heavenly Father, We renounce our attachment with the god of this world. And ask that you restore us to you. Bring us back to you. Cleanse and purify us and make us whole. Restore our connection with you through Jesus Christ, Amen.
